Open die forging is carried out between flat dies and there is no pre-cut profile in the dies.The motion of the workpiece is the key to this method.Large parts in excess of 200,000 pounds.Eighty feet long can be hammered or pressed into shape in this way.
 
Free forging can produce forgings ranging from a few pounds to more than 150 tons.It is called an open die because the metal is not restricted horizontally by the pressing die during the forging process, in which the raw material is gradually machined into the desired shape, most commonly between flat dies.In practice, free die forging includes many technological variations, allowing the production of an extremely wide range of shapes and sizes.In fact, the sheer size capability of free die forging makes it a clear process choice over non-forging alternatives when design standards require optimal structural integrity for large metal parts.At the high end of the size range, free forgings are limited only by the size of the raw material, i.e. the maximum ingot that can be cast.
 
 
Forging is a forming process in which metal is deformed by repeated impact.Die - opening and die - closing are two basic methods of forging titanium.The force here is applied by the hammer, and gravity can be used alone or in combination with steam pressure, air pressure, or some auxiliary force.The forging operation must be carried out while the metal is kept at a high temperature to facilitate the flow of titanium.
