The production process of titanium elbow is similar to that of stainless steel elbow. In this paper, four common methods of producing titanium elbow are introduced: mandle-rod method, extrusion method, UO method and thermal forming method.
One of the production technology of titanium elbow: mandrel method (hot forming)
One of the most common elbow manufacturing processes for making an elbow from a titanium tube is the mandrel method, which is a thermal molding method.
In this method, the pipe is cut to the desired length and pushed with a hydraulic plunger.An inductive heating coil heats the pipe and then pushes it through a mold called a "spindle" that allows the pipe to expand and bend simultaneously.
The method can be used to manufacture a wide range of elbow diameters.In this figure, you can see that the pipe is cut to the desired length in the first step.The cut pipe is then placed on the mandrel.Next, with the help of a hydraulic tool, the pipe is pushed onto the die while an induction coil heats the fitting to form an elbow.Finally, the elbow is sent for heat treatment and machining before appearance and dimensions are checked.
In the cold extrusion process, a titanium tube with the same diameter and thickness as the finished product is passed through the mold to shape it into the desired shape.Usually applied to small to medium titanium elbows.
The cut titanium tube is pushed into the cold bending mold.Appropriate lubrication is required to avoid excessive friction and to protect the surface finish of the final elbow.The extruded titanium elbow is sent for heat treatment and machining, followed by appearance and dimension inspection.
The UO method is used to manufacture medium - sized elbows, tees, and reducers.The plate is cut into a specially designed shape, first using a mold to shape it into a U shape and then using another mold to shape it into an O or tube shape, which is why the method is called the UO method.
Once the fitting is made into a tumbler shape, it is soldered from the inside and outside of the closed seam.Large titanium elbows are made by welding two separate plates.The prepared titanium elbow is also heat treated and machined, and then inspected for appearance and dimension.
Hot Forming Method
In the thermoforming die bending method, the tube is heated to the forming temperature and molded in a mold with a specific shape. This process can be repeated as needed to obtain the desired shape, size, and wall thickness.
Thermal forming methods are usually applied to thick-walled elbows that cannot be bent on a spindle die.
