Product

 

Titanium has been successfully forged using open die methods, using conventional equipment designed for steel, but at lower temperatures and higher pressures.Titanium forging requires a lower temperature because it first limits the resulting surface contamination and second prevents excessive grain growth, both of which reduce the ductility of forged parts.Because of the lower temperature, a higher pressure must be used to deform the metal.

 

 

Forging temperatures are usually between 1450°F (790°C) and 1950°F (1065°C).Temperatures as low as 1650°F (900°C) are suitable for non-alloyed titanium, while higher temperatures are suitable for alloyed titanium.If the equipment can provide the force required to deform the metal, lower temperatures than those specified may be used.
 
It is recommended that the soaking temperature be approximately 1200 to 1300°F (650 to 700°C) and that the material be heated to forging temperature prior to operation.As the temperature drops, forging can be carried out.In order to achieve good ductility, it has been found to be preferable to have a fine forging at temperatures not lower than 1550°F (840°C).
 
Closed die forging differs from free die forging in that it produces a finished shape.Metal is pressed into a preforming die to obtain the precise desired profile.In closed die forging, the temperature and pressure of heavy parts are comparable to those used in open die forging.Light-weight materials are formed at 800 to 1000°F (425 to 540°C), requiring slightly lower pressure and a slower rate of deformation.
